What does it bring to the table? What problem does it solve?
I look at it in the same vein as Wallpaper Engine, it's more of a "nice-to-have". It natively supports MacOS, Android, and Linux which some other launchers don't do, and it can act as a nice offline alternative to the Steam client with the same level of polish. It's also pretty. There's a bunch of other little reasons too why people might like it.
What are some key feature?
- Cross-Platform: Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, BSD, and more all under a single codebase.
‎ - Customizable: Colors, Styles, and Layouts can be changed and shared with the community, no extensions required.
‎ - Modes: Full controller and touch support across “Desktop Mode”, “Controller Mode” (Supports 2D & 3D Custom Themes), “Small Mode”, “Mobile Mode”, and “VR Mode”.
‎ - Unification: Quickly import from Steam, Gog, Emulators, DRM-Free games, and more. All your game links can be stored in a single cross-platform .csv spreadsheet file behind the scenes.
‎ - Performance: It’s fast even with 1,000,000 games added. The app is a single "Portable" file, with no installation required. It can scale from low-end devices up to 8K displays.
‎ - Web Browser: Optionally embeds your OS's pre-existing browser with WebView (desktop only).
‎ - And More: Clean and predictable UI. Supports Dual-screen, 3D box art and game manuals. Powerful shelf and sorting options. Anything internet related is Opt-in. No login required. Immutable design philosophy.

Control Game Launcher was created using the Godot Game Engine, meaning anything a video game can do, the Control Launcher can do and that’s a big deal.
It unlocks a lot of potential for 3D Themes, shader effects, optionally embedding your OS's existing web browser, or even VR support! Because the application is technically a fancy video game, it has access to system resources that other browser based launchers don’t have, and it uses those resources more efficiently too.
Godot is very general purpose and adaptable compared to other game engines and has a large community of people that already know how to use it. So now the same people making the video games can be the same people expanding the Game Launcher through it's standardized plugin system.*
